WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF DAY TO WORKOUT?

While nutrition will always be 90% of the weight loss equation, we must work to maintain strength, flexibility, and stamina and to keep our body balanced from the inside out. Workouts also minimize tension and stress, eliminate toxins from our bodies, and optimize our mental health by stimulating the production of mood-boosting hormones. But what is the best time of day to work out?

IT’S ALL ABOUT WHAT WORKS FOR YOU

First up, you will burn the same number of calories in the morning, afternoon, or evening. However, there is likely to be a time of day when you are more motivated to work out, so figure out what time that is. Between your personal and professional commitments, scheduling may be the primary determining factor of what time of day you work out. That being said, there are specific benefits to both AM and PM workouts.

BENEFITS OF AM WORKOUTS

If you aren’t a morning person, getting up early to hit the gym, go for a run, or work at home can be a challenge. However, morning workouts give you a massive energy boost. Not only that, they start your day off with a sense of accomplishment. Just make sure you leave enough time to squeeze in a healthy breakfast.

BENEFITS OF PM WORKOUTS

Working out after work or in the evening is an excellent way to release the tension of the day. It can also help you to mentally switch gears and provide a second wind so that you are energetic and engaged with your friends and family. Just make sure that you don’t work out right before bedtime as you may feel too stimulated to sleep. However, a PM yoga or stretch session can improve the quality of your sleep.

TIME OF DAY IS NOT THE ONLY FACTOR

Time of day is one of many motivating factors when deciding when to work out, but there are a few other things to consider. For example, if you have a workout buddy you may opt to work out when they are available. If you are more motivated in group classes or during personal training sessions, the time of day is less of a factor. When you find a physical activity that you genuinely love, like a dance class, sport, or weather-specific activity like skiing, water sports, or hiking, it doesn’t matter when it’s scheduled. Odds are your workout schedule will vary from one week or season to the next. So, identify the time of day you are less tempted to skip your workout and balance it with your other motivating factors.
