2020 HEALTH AND WELLNESS GOALS

The New Year is a fresh start and an excellent time to set a few personal goals. The problem with standard resolutions is that most of us set the same generic goals each year, which we abandon about 6 weeks in. Below are clear, specific, and measurable health and wellness goals that are easy to implement.

MAKE ONE SMALL HEALTHY CHANGE A MONTH

Weight loss and improved health are a popular resolution but most of us set goals that are too general, such as “lose weight”. Or we set goals that are unrealistic or complex, therefore difficult to maintain. Instead, make a list of healthy changes you would like to implement each month. This might include goals such as:

  • Eat one plant-based meal a day
  • Go to bed every night by 10:30 pm
  • Try one new fitness class a month
  • Drink 64 ounces of water a day
  • Walk for 15 minutes on your lunch break
  • Try one new fruit, vegetable, grain, or recipe a month
  • Do one physical family activity a month
  • Upgrade to a convertible or standing desk

UNPLUG DAILY

We aren’t just constantly connected; most of us are digitally distracted, checking our phones over 80 times a day. This can lead to decision fatigue, decreased productivity, increased stress, decreased quality of sleep, and compromised human connection. So, set a few times each day to unplug. The first and last hours of the day are an excellent place to start, as are an hour or two at work and during meals with friends and family.

CREATE A DAILY ROUTINE

How we start our day can set the tone for the day ahead, and how we end our day can impact the quality of our sleep. So, consider a soothing morning routine. In addition to not checking your phone for a full hour after you wake, this might include waking up 10 minutes early to meditate solo or with the Calm or Headspace meditation app.

In the evenings your routine could include not watching the news or anything disruptive for 2 hours before you go to bed, reading for 30 minutes or more, or doing a PM yoga routine to stretch away the stress of the day. You could even start a gratitude journal and write down 10 things you are grateful for.
